The Stories of George Alec Effinger,
2214 days ago (April 26, 2006 )

All of it, from the noirish almost cyberpunk novel When Gravity Fails to his lighthearted Buffy Birnbaum stories. Often overlooked, his Budayeen series was recently reprinted and deserves more than cult status.

Witch, The Band,

And we are talking about the “new” Witch, not the heavy/glam metal band from LA in the 80’s (though their 12” EP is a favorite around here too, but more of an acquired taste). Anyways, this Witch’s self-titled full length is without a doubt the most vintage sounding 70’s doomy hard rock record since Wtichcraft. See the theme here for Pentagram and Blue Cheer inspired bands? Features members of Upsidedown Cross and Deep Wound, if you catch our drift.

History of The Butthole Surfers,

As found in the their chapter in Michael Azerrad’s Our Band Could Be Your Life, these tales of nudity, acid, debauchery, and some of the most insane music from the mid-80’s punk scene make for fascinating reading and great small talk at both dinner parties and basement shows. We won’t speak of the post Touch & Go years, and neither should you.

Natural Peanut Butter Pretzels,

Rather cleverly located near the checkout lanes at Whole Foods, these are addictive and delicious. The peanut butter complements the salty pretzels. Chocolate pretzels are good too, but everyone knows that already.

The Theme Song From Fletch,

Probably no better tune for skulking around searching for clues in the 1980’s.

Wearable Tupperware,

Here’s something on that’s come up several times in the last two days. With all the clothing being designed to hold gadgets like iPods and such, why don’t they have clothing build to hold food? A nice sweatshirt with a plastic lined sealable pocket for crumbly cookies or cereal seems like a handy item for people of all ages. Clothing designers of the world take this and run with it and we promise it will be a future favorite. Please.

Hall of fame horror comedy for sure. The Tremors comparison in the trailer is not unfounded…

The Horror Comedy,

A totally underappreciated genre that really deserves to have lots of discussion and popcorn thrown it’s way.
